This July 1, 1885 deed contains the earliest known
mention of the tavern shaped like a partridge trap
from which many think Trappe got its name. It
describes a lot near the center of town sold to James
M. Leonard by Philemon Mullikin and goes on to state
that "This lot located in center of the town of
Trappe: and legend has it: That it was upon this lot
the first house ever built here was erected. it was a
log-house, used as a groggery & gambling house-
built in the shape of a Partridge Trap, and here many
of the older residenters were trapped on their way to
& from the shire town “Easton”: and
hence the name “Trappe”. J. M. Leonard
Surveyor"
This lot is the same one shown on the 1877 Gray's New Map of Trappe map of downtown Trappe marked
"P. Mullikin". (see
map 917 in the map gallery) It was later the site of
Corkran's store. The modern address is 29349
Maple Ave. Deed courtesy James Leonard.
