By 1872, oyster beds in parts of the Bay were being depleted so the State of Maryland passed one of the first oyster laws which required a license to catch oysters. This license was issued on Nov. 5, 1873 to James Willis probably of Island Creek Neck. The total fee was $2.60 including the clerk's fee. License used courtesy of a private collection.
