Letter mailed from Trappe in 1847. This is what is called a stampless cover which is a letter mailed in the days before there were postage stamps. Postage was 5¢, the amount was written by hand in the upper right hand corner. There is no envelope either, the letter was folded and sealed with wax in such a way that the address could be written on the outside.
