Land of Legendary Lore by Prentiss Ingraham
published in 1898 mentions a "striking
feature" about Trappe on p. 163: a grave in the
middle of a street, the head and foot stones parallel
with the sidewalk "though dating far back, but I
could not learn how it was that this grave came there
in the public thoroughfare." It remained in the
street well into the 20th century when it was finally
moved to one side when the street is being paved. The
grave stone is of Elizabeth Lee who died in 1827 and
it survives, still in good condition, at the
northeast corner of the Methodist Church lot.
