One of the activities sponsored by Trappe's Cub Scout Troop 189 was a
Pinewood Derby race. This was a race of little wooden toy cars made to
a standard size approx. 7 x 1 3/4 inches. Scouts would assemble, sand
and paint the various parts which would then be raced down a slanted
track at one of the troops meetings on the second floor of the Trappe
Vol. Fire House. For some unknown reason (since all the cars were
virtually identical), Jimmy Dawson's racer beat the wheels off the all
the local competition about 1959. In fact, it was so fast, the judges
had to examine the car to make sure it had not been "hopped up", but
all the parts were found to be stock. It was then sent off to compete
in the state and national finals, but returned home in disgrace. No
trophy for Trappe; there were much faster cars out there.
Here it is out for a spin on Rt. 50 for the first time in about 49
years. The paint still looks good! On its box, someone has written "To
Bucky Saulsbury Jimmy Dawson's Winning Racer."
