Map by Mitchell 1846
This map by Mitchell done in 1846 shows three places on the Eastern Shore named Trap. They are located in Talbot Co., Somerset Co. sw of Salisbury, and in Worcester Co. se of Berlin. By the 1870s, the spelling of all three had changed to Trappe.
At one time there were a total of seven Traps in Maryland and one in Delaware. There are various theories about the origin of the name including taverns shaped like wooden partridge traps, animal traps, mill dams and even a Trappist monastery, but no one knows for sure.
