The gravestone of Elizabeth Martin, 1676
Rubbing of the gravestone of Elizabeth Martin, 1676
The gravestone of Elizabeth Martin is the oldest known in Talbot County, and the third oldest on the Eastern Shore. Barely legible today, it was transcribed in 1873 as reading
Here/ lyeth the body/ of Elizabeth Martin,/ borne in Maryland, ye/ daughter of Thomas/ Martin. She departed/ this life in the year/ Ano Dom. 1676
The Martins lived at Hampden on Island Creek Neck, near Trappe.
It is interesting that the words "borne in Maryland" were carved on her stone. Legend has it that her (sister?) Hannah was the first white child born in Talbot Co., but no gravestone is known for Hannah. Although people were living, and dying, here before 1676, their tombstones have not survived, possibly because they were either made of wood, or were small homemade field stones which have disappeared. So perhaps Hannah's stone is lost.
Either that, or Elizabeth was the first white child born in the county and legend got its Martins mixed.
The rubbing of the stone is easier to read.
